USING VERBS OF PERCEPTION

昨日のつぶやきの
「中娘、英語テストの夏休み何したか？英作文で、I listened to Tegomass singing.と書いたら、先生にI listened to Tegomass’ songs.と赤入れられて×。」
のコメント欄で、自動詞＋前置詞ではsomeone doing somethingが来る構文は見たことが無いというコメントをいただいた。
そう言われればそうかも、と思った私であったが、我が家にあるBetty S.Azarの文法書「UNDERSTANDING AND USING ENGLISH GRAMMAR」をひもとくと、そういう用例は普通にあることがわかったのでご報告。
以下、P.336より引用。
Chapter15ｰ7　USING VERBS OF PERCEPTION
(a) I saw my friend run down the street.
(b) I saw my friend running down the street.
(c) I heard the rain fall on the roof.
(d) I heard the rain falling on the roof.
Certain verbs of perception are followed by either the simple form★ or the the -ing form★★ of a verb. There is often little difference in meaning between the two forms, except that the -ing form usually gives the idea of “while”. In (b): I saw my friend while she was running down the street.
(e) When I walked into the apartment, I heard my roommate singing in the shower.
(f) I heard a famous opera star sing at the concert last night.
Sometime (not always) there is a clear difference between using the simple form or the -ing form. The use of the -ing form gives the idea that an activity is already in progress when it is perceived, as in (e): The singing was in progress when I first heard it. In (f): I heard the singing from beginning to end. It was not in progress when I first heard it.

★The simple form of a verb = the infinitive form without “to”. INCRRECT: I saw my friend to run down the street.
★★The -ing form refers to the present participle.
このあと、例題があって、その中にも、
I like to listen to the birds singing/sing when I get up early in the morning.
などの文章が載っていた。
勉強になりました<(_ _)>。
しかし、中娘のテストの回答「I listened to Tegomass singing.」が、なぜ○をもらえなかったのか。結論は出ないのだった。
